The food we eat tells a lot about our culture. Belonging to different cultures, we grow up eating our staple food and eventually, it becomes our identity. Food doesn’t just fill our stomach, it feeds our soul. To some, happiness is a plate of kimchi, white rice, while to some, it is fried Spam that brings delight (1). Whatever be, food acts as the greatest unifier in a world that is diversified by different cultures and identities.
Food as Identity: Each and every culture and religion utilize food as a major aspect of their festivals. Each season, each harvest, and each occasion have its own sustenance. It defines our identity.
Food as Survival: Most of the choices made in many parts of the world are completely born out of economic necessities. Cooks in China survive in America and earn a living through their cooking (2).
Food as Community: In Arab cultures, a community is a key to the food culture. Families and institutions will host private iftars, of course, but mosques, schools, markets and other community organizations will also offer large if tar meals, and all are shared to the public (3).
Food as Pleasure: Food, in some countries, such as France is still about pleasure. Cooking and eating are both past time and pleasure for French people (4). Not every day is a traditional cooking day for them.
Food as Humanity: The first human experience we have with the social world is being fed by our mother’s breasts. The act of eating plays an important role in how we become human, as much as speaking and taking care of ourselves. Learning to eat is learning to become human.
